چکیده

Herein, the effect of an applied moderate (≈240 mT) magnetic field on work adhesion (WoA) mechanically soft (the shear modulus ≈10 kPa) magnetoactive elastomer (MAE) samples with two different mass fractions (70 and 80 wt%) carbonyl iron powder (CIP) is concerned. The unfilled sample used for comparison. Due to some sedimentation filling particles, concentration inclusions in thin (≈10 μm) subsurface layers different. It shown that WoA increases (up 1.8‐fold) particle‐enriched side (PES) its value higher filler concentration. On particle‐depleted (PDS), does not depend particle field. Adhesion friction are coupled MAEs. No statistically significant difference coefficient, determined from extended Amontons´ law, depending side, CIP concentration, or presence found. However, PDS demonstrates significantly critical stress compared PES absence Correlations between surface properties discussed. Obtained results useful development magnetically controllable robots.

Magnetoactive elastomers with periodic and random microstructures

We investigate the behavior of magnetoactive elastomers (MAEs) with periodic and random distributions of circular and elliptical fibers. For the MAEs with periodic microstructures, we develop finite element models and determine the local fields as well as the effective properties of MAEs with rectangular and quasi-hexagonal unit cells. For the MAEs with random microstructures, we derive a close...

Measurement of adhesion between soft elastomers

The JKR (Johnson–Kendall–Roberts) method is widely used to measure the work of adhesion between soft materials. In this article, the JKR theory is summarized and three-dimensionless parameters are proposed to design a proper JKR experiment. The study of adhesion between two commonly used soft elastomers PDMS (Sylgard 184) and Ecofl ex 0300 are obtained with the measured pull-in and pull-off for...

Ultra-Soft PDMS-Based Magnetoactive Elastomers as Dynamic Cell Culture Substrata

Mechanical cues such as extracellular matrix stiffness and movement have a major impact on cell differentiation and function. To replicate these biological features in vitro, soft substrata with tunable elasticity and the possibility for controlled surface translocation are desirable. Here we report on the use of ultra-soft (Young's modulus <100 kPa) PDMS-based magnetoactive elastomers (MAE) as...

Modelling Friction and Abrasive Wear of Elastomers

In order to properly model the friction and wear of elastomer materials, it is essential to understand some specific mechanical and tribological features. Mechanical characteristics of elastomer materials are different from those of metals and other relatively hard materials. Elastomers can bear large deformations, the stress-strain curves are non-linear, time and temperature dependent. When th...

Capillarity-based switchable adhesion.

Drawing inspiration from the adhesion abilities of a leaf beetle found in nature, we have engineered a switchable adhesion device. The device combines two concepts: The surface tension force from a large number of small liquid bridges can be significant (capillarity-based adhesion) and these contacts can be quickly made or broken with electronic control (switchable). The device grabs or release...
