Mapping the ghost: Estimating probabilistic snow leopard distribution across Mongolia

نویسندگان

چکیده

Aim Snow leopards are distributed across the mountains of 12 countries spread 1.8 million km2 in Central and South Asia. Previous efforts to map snow leopard distributions have relied on expert opinions modelling presence-only data. Expert opinion is subjective its reliability difficult assess, while analyses data tended ignore imperfect detectability this elusive species. The study was conducted prepare first ever probabilistic distribution Mongolia addressing challenge detection. Location We sign-based occupancy surveys 1,017 grid-cells covering 406,800 Mongolia's potential range. Methods Using a candidate model set 31 ecologically meaningful models that used six site seven sampling covariates, we estimate probability sites being by entire country. Results Occupancy increased with greater terrain ruggedness, lower values vegetation indices, less forest cover, were highest at intermediate altitudes. Detection higher for segments walked foot, those more rugged terrain. Our results showed broad agreement maps developed using but also highlighted important differences, example northern areas deemed largely unfavourable previous analyses. Main conclusions This reports national-level survey highlights methodological opportunities can be taken scale support conservation planning. assessments indicated <12% land mass, 42% habitat has high (>0.5) leopards. emphasize utility modelling, which jointly detection use, achieving these goals.

Prey Preference of Snow Leopard (Panthera uncia) in South Gobi, Mongolia

Accurate information about the diet of large carnivores that are elusive and inhabit inaccessible terrain, is required to properly design conservation strategies. Predation on livestock and retaliatory killing of predators have become serious issues throughout the range of the snow leopard. Several feeding ecology studies of snow leopards have been conducted using classical approaches. These te...

Vigorous Dynamics Underlie a Stable Population of the Endangered Snow Leopard Panthera uncia in Tost Mountains, South Gobi, Mongolia

Population monitoring programmes and estimation of vital rates are key to understanding the mechanisms of population growth, decline or stability, and are important for effective conservation action. We report, for the first time, the population trends and vital rates of the endangered snow leopard based on camera trapping over four years in the Tost Mountains, South Gobi, Mongolia. We used rob...

Assessing Estimators of Snow Leopard Abundance

The secretive nature of snow leopards (Uncia uncia) makes them difficult to monitor, yet conservation efforts require accurate and precise methods to estimate abundance. We assessed accuracy of Snow Leopard Information Management System (SLIMS) sign surveys by comparing them with 4 methods for estimating snow leopard abundance: predator:prey biomass ratios, capture–recapture density estimation,...

Estimating Snow Leopard Population Abundance Using Photography and Capture–Recapture Techniques

Conservation and management of snow leopards (Uncia uncia) has largely relied on anecdotal evidence and presence–absence data due to their cryptic nature and the difficult terrain they inhabit. These methods generally lack the scientific rigor necessary to accurately estimate population size and monitor trends. We evaluated the use of photography in capture–mark–recapture (CMR) techniques for e...

estimating the distribution of snow melt equivalent at the peak of snow accumulation, through degree – day model

estimating snow melt water equivalent is one of the most important challenges in determining the hydrological regime in mountainous basins. there are some problematic obstacles in field observations, due to inaccessibility as well due to difficulties in snow sampling at snow covered peaks making researchers try to find indirect approaches. one of these methods in use is degree- day model that i...
