Michael Diaz, Zaria Opara, Heysel Morales, Steven Hawkins, Louise Kelly, Allan Knox PURPOSE: Low-to-moderate intensity aerobic exercise has been reported to elicit changes in systemic hemodynamics. Recent evidence suggests that the cerebral circulation reacts independently circulations same physiological stimuli. The aim of this is determine influence high-intensity on common carotid artery (CCA) METHODS: Hemodynamic measurements were recorded before and following cessation a maximum oxygen uptake test (VO2max). One minute video CCA by Doppler ultrasound used peak systolic velocity (PSV), end diastolic (EDV), time averaged mean blood (TAMEAN), timed average (TAMAX), pulsatility index (PI), resistance (RI). diameters calculated commercially available vessel tracking software. Carotid stiffness (β), Peterson’s pressure modulus (Ep), arterial compliance (AC) was also calculated. RESULTS: A total 29 individuals, 14 male 15 females, participated study (21.9 ± 3.9 years). Following exercise, PSV (p < 0.001), TAMAX = 0.0085), RI PI 0.0032) significantly increased whilst minimum diameter 0.005), 0.020) decreased. No observed for β 0.491), Ep 0.834) or AC 0.535). CONCLUSION: results show hemodynamic VO2max exercise. Specifically, increases vascular are likely due reductions diameter, which may be evident downstream CCA. Acute maximal does not change parameters.

Decreased Intima-Media Carotid Artery Thickness after 24 Sessions of Combined Aerobic and Resistance Exercise in Type 2 Diabetic Patients

Background and Objective: Diabetes type 2 has been estimated as the seventh leading cause of death worldwide. Diabetic patients are 2-3 times more likely to be at the risk of atherosclerosis, compared to normal people. It has been reported that exercise prevents atherosclerosis in diabetic patients. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the effect of exercise on vascular variables...

Resistance Versus Aerobic Exercise

OBJECTIVE In type 1 diabetes, small studies have found that resistance exercise (weight lifting) reduces HbA(1c). In the current study, we examined the acute impacts of resistance exercise on glycemia during exercise and in the subsequent 24 h compared with aerobic exercise and no exercise. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS Twelve physically active individuals with type 1 diabetes (HbA(1c) 7.1 ± 1....

Combined aerobic and resistance training and vascular function: effect of aerobic exercise before and after resistance training.

Aerobic exercise training combined with resistance training (RT) might prevent the deterioration of vascular function. However, how aerobic exercise performed before or after a bout of RT affects vascular function is unknown. The present study investigates the effect of aerobic exercise before and after RT on vascular function. Thirty-three young, healthy subjects were randomly assigned to grou...

Aerobic, Resistance, and Cognitive Exercise Training Poststroke.

S troke may cause physical or cognitive impairments. Approximately 50% to 75% of all stroke survivors have residual motor or cognitive disabilities that prevent them from living independently. Muscle weakness is considered a major cause of motor disability in stroke patients. 1 Impaired walking occurs in as many as 80% of individuals immediately after stroke, 2 with muscle weakness in the paret...

Effect of aerobic and resistance exercise training on vascular function in heart failure.

Exercise training of a muscle group improves local vascular function in subjects with chronic heart failure (CHF). We studied forearm resistance vessel function in 12 patients with CHF in response to an 8-wk exercise program, which specifically excluded forearm exercise, using a crossover design. Forearm blood flow (FBF) was measured using strain-gauge plethysmography. Responses to three dose l...
