Dynamical Friction and Galaxy Merging Timescales
The timescale for galaxies within merging dark matter halos to merge with each other is an important ingredient in galaxy formation models. Accurate estimates of merging timescales are required for predictions of astrophysical quantities such as black hole binary merger rates, the build-up of stellar mass in central galaxies, and the statistical properties of satellite galaxies within dark matt...
متن کاملCluster Physics with Merging Galaxy Clusters
Collisions between galaxy clusters provide a unique opportunity to study matter in a parameter space which cannot be explored in our laboratories on Earth. In the standard 3CDM model, where the total density is dominated by the cosmological constant (3) and the matter density by cold dark matter (CDM), structure formation is hierarchical, and clusters growmostly by merging. Mergers of two massi...
متن کاملStrong Lensing Analysis of the Galaxy Cluster Macs J1319.9+7003 and the Discovery of a Shell Galaxy
We present a strong-lensing (SL) analysis of the galaxy cluster MACS J1319.9+7003 (z=0.33, also known as Abell 1722), as part of our ongoing effort to analyze massive clusters with archival Hubble Space Telescope (HST) imaging. We spectroscopically measured with Keck/Multi-Object Spectrometer For Infra-Red Exploration (MOSFIRE) two galaxies multiply imaged by the cluster. Our analysis reveals...
متن کاملRevealing the Properties of Dark Matter in the Merging Cluster Macs J0025.4−1222
We constrain the physical nature of dark matter using the newly identified massive merging galaxy cluster MACS J0025.4−1222. As was previously shown by the example of the Bullet Cluster (1E065756), such systems are ideal laboratories for detecting isolated dark matter, and distinguishing between cold dark matter (CDM) and other scenarios (e.g. self-interacting dark matter, alternative gravity t...
متن کاملDiscovery of a large - scale filament connected to the massive galaxy cluster MACS
We report the detection of a 4 h −1 70 Mpc long large-scale filament leading into the massive galaxy cluster MACS J0717.5+3745. The extent of this object well beyond the cluster's nominal virial radius (∼ 2.3 Mpc) rules out prior interaction between its constituent galaxies and the cluster and makes it a prime candidate for a genuine filament as opposed to a merger remnant or a double cluster. ...
