Mechanisms of cognitive disinhibition explain individual differences in adult attention deficit hyperactivity disorder traits

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in adults is strongly associated with psychiatric comorbidity and functional impairment. Here, we aimed to use a newly developed online cognitive battery strong psychometric properties for measuring individual differences three mechanisms proposed underlie ADHD traits adults: 1) attentional control – the ability mobilize resources stop prepotent motor response; 2) information sampling/gathering adequate sampling of stimulus detection task prior making decision; 3) shifting - adapt behavior response positive negative contingencies. This cross-sectional correlational study recruited 650 (330 males) aged 18 69 years (M = 33.06; MD 31.00; SD 10.50), previously diagnosed (n 329) those from general community without history 321). Self-report measures (i.e., inattention/disorganization, impulsivity, hyperactivity) were completed online. Latent class analysis, exploratory structural equation modeling factor mixture revealed self-reported formed unidimensional approximately normally distributed phenotype. Bayesian demonstrated that all measured by battery, explained unique, incremental variance traits, total 15.9% trait factor. Attentional shifting, as well less researched process gathering, explain difference potential yield genetic neurobiological insights into adult ADHD.
