Meiobenthic assemblages as ecological indicator of natural variability induced by ecosystem engineers

نویسندگان

چکیده

Indonesia is biologically one of the most diverse areas in world. Nevertheless, its biodiversity underestimated, and this particularly evident for meiobenthic assemblages. Seagrass meadows are known to be ecosystem engineers that can significantly modify habitat heterogeneity and, thereby, increase diversity. Therefore, a study on distribution was conducted two seagrass around Siladen Island (Bunaken Marine National Park): Barat Lagoon, characterized by different sedimentary regimes, as well anthropogenic impact. An overall high level diversity indices richness were recorded (H′: 1.19–1.69; J: 0.46–0.67; number taxa: 9–14), with abundances ranging between 770 2529 ind. 10 cm −2. The lowest abundance (i.e. Shannon-diversity, taxa) reported at meadow, probably response sedimentological modifications higher pressure site. Differences assemblage structures when only rare taxa considered (i.e found low sporadic area). This result underlines role species possible indicators spatial variability generated engineer environmental conditions.

Using ecosystem engineers to restore ecological systems.

Ecosystem engineers affect other organisms by creating, modifying, maintaining or destroying habitats. Despite widespread recognition of these often important effects, the ecosystem engineering concept has yet to be widely used in ecological applications. Here, we present a conceptual framework that shows how consideration of ecosystem engineers can be used to assess the likelihood of restorati...

A mathematical model of plants as ecosystem engineers.

Understanding the structure and dynamics of plant communities in water-limited systems often calls for the identification of ecosystem engineers--key species that modify the landscape, redistribute resources and facilitate the growth of other species. Shrubs are excellent examples; they self-organize to form patterns of mesic patches which provide habitats for herbaceous species. In this paper ...

Natural and human-induced variability in the composition of fish assemblages in the Northwestern Cuban shelf.

The main goal of the study was to obtain field data to build a baseline of fish assemblage composition that can be used comparatively for future analyses of the impact of human actions in the region. A basic network of 68 sampling stations was defined for the entire region (4,050 km2). Fish assemblage species and size composition was estimated using visual census methods at three different spat...

Using oligochaeta assemblages as an indicator of environmental changes.

We designed a field survey (the entire river length; not dammed: First and Second plateaus; dammed: Third Plateau) to test the hypothesis that the cascade of reservoirs promoted a reduction in species richness and changed the composition of Oligochaeta assemblage along the Iguaçu River. Changes in environmental variables and in richness and composition of Oligochaeta were summarized by Canonic ...

Climate change impedes scleractinian corals as primary reef ecosystem engineers

Coral reefs are among themost diverse and productive ecosystems on our planet. Scleractinian corals function as the primary reef ecosystem engineers, constructing the framework that serves as a habitat for all other coral reefassociated organisms. However, the coral’s engineering role is particularly susceptible to global climate change. Ocean warming can cause extensive mass coral bleaching, w...
