چکیده
Abstract. This study compares trends in the Hadley cell (HC) strength using different metrics applied to ECMWF ERA5 and ERA-Interim reanalyses for period 1979–2018. The HC is commonly evaluated by derived from mass-weighted zonal-mean stream function isobaric coordinates. Other include upper tropospheric velocity potential, vertical mid-troposphere, water vapour transport lower troposphere. Seven known of are complemented here a metric spatially averaged strength, obtained averaging latitude–pressure (?–p) plane, total energy unbalanced circulation normal-mode decomposition. It shown that metrics, which rely on single-point values ?–p produce unreliable 40-year both northern southern HCs, especially ERA-Interim; magnitudes even signs depend choice metric. two new alleviate meridional inhomogeneities strength. suggests positive trend reanalyses, whereas based finds significant only ERA5.

متن کاملEddy influences on the strength of the Hadley circulation: dynamic and thermodynamic perspectives
The strength of the equinoctial Hadley circulation (HC) is investigated in idealized simulations conducted on an equatorial beta plane in which the zonal width of the domain is varied to either permit or suppress large-scale eddies. The presence of such eddies is found to amplify the HC by a factor of 2–3 in simulations with slab-ocean boundary conditions or with a simple representation of ocea...
متن کاملOn the dynamics of the Hadley circulation and subtropical drying
Changes in subtropical precipitation and the Hadley circulation (HC) are inextricably linked. The original Halley–Hadley model cannot explain certain aspects of the Earth’s meridional circulation in the tropics and is of limited use in understanding regional changes in precipitation. Here, we expand on previous work on the regional and seasonal aspects of the HC, in particular how land–sea temp...
متن کاملThe Hadley Circulation and the Weak Temperature Gradient Approximation
The weak temperature gradient (WTG) approximation is applied to simple shallow-water models of the Hadley circulation. While it is difficult to formally justify the use of the WTG approximation for this problem, the derived WTG solutions are shown to agree well with numerical solutions of the full equations and to converge to the traditional angular momentum conserving (AMC) solutions in the in...
