Effect of LPSO and SFs on microstructure evolution and mechanical properties of Mg-Gd-Y-Zn-Zr alloy
High performance Mg-8.2Gd-3.8Y-1.0Zn-0.4Zr alloy with high strength and excellent ductility has been successfully developed by hot extrusion. The effect of plate-shaped long period stacking ordered (LPSO) phases and solute-segregated stacking faults (SFs) on the dynamically recrystallization (DRX) behavior was analyzed. The plate-shaped LPSO phases stimulate the DRX by particle stimulated nucle...
متن کاملMicrostructure Evolution in Mg-Zn-Zr-Gd Biodegradable Alloy: The Decisive Bridge Between Extrusion Temperature and Performance
Being a biocompatible metal with similar mechanical properties as bones, magnesium bears both biodegradability suitable for bone substitution and chemical reactivity detrimental in bio-ambiences. To benefit its biomaterial applications, we developed Mg-2.0Zn-0.5Zr-3.0Gd (wt%) alloy through hot extrusion and tailored its biodegradability by just varying the extrusion temperatures during alloy pr...
متن کاملTailoring microstructure of Mg–Zn–Y alloys with quasicrystal and related phases for high mechanical strength
The occurrence of a stable icosahedral (i-) phase, which is quasicrystalline with an icosahedral (fivefold) symmetry, on the equilibrium phase diagram of Mg-Zn-RE (RE = Y, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho or Er) alloys opened up an interesting possibility of developing a new series of magnesium alloys for structural applications. Alloys based on the i-phase have been studied for the past 14 years. Ultra-high str...
متن کاملMicrostructure Evolution and Biodegradation Behavior of Laser Rapid Solidified Mg–Al–Zn Alloy
The too fast degradation of magnesium (Mg) alloys is a major impediment hindering their orthopedic application, despite their superior mechanical properties and favorable biocompatibility. In this study, the degradation resistance of AZ61 (Al 6 wt. %, Zn 1 wt. %, remaining Mg) was enhanced by rapid solidification via selective laser melting (SLM). The results indicated that an increase of the l...
متن کاملModulated Structures, Nanocrystals and Quasicrystals in Mg-Zn-Y Alloys
The formation of the icosahedral phase, BCC (Body centred cubic) phase and nanocrystals are seen in the as-cast alloy with nominal composition of Mg4Zn94Y2. FCC (face centred cubic) phase and modulated structures are formed in the alloys with higher Y content (10% and 25% Y respectively). These phases are analysed keeping in view their relation to the quasicrystals of the Mg-Zn-Y system.
