Modeling of a Three-Stage Cascaded Refrigeration System Based on Standard Refrigeration Compressors in Cryogenic Applications above 110 K

More and more applications, such as natural gas liquefaction, LNG reliquefaction, whole body cryotherapy cryopreservation, require cooling in the temperature range from 110 to 150 K. This can be achieved systems using standard refrigeration compressors, which are reliable cost-effective, but subject certain operating limits. paper investigates potential of a three-stage cascaded system based on compressors this temperatures. The investigation takes into account vital limitations aims look for possible refrigerant configurations (taking PFCs, HFCs, HCs HOs); performance power COP; influences architecture (single-stage two-stage compression). whether it is design if so, at what cost? shows that reach lowest 127 K with COP 0.179, corresponds Carnot efficiency 0.262. Moreover, refrigerants found advantageous terms temperatures compared those use synthetic refrigerants. Furthermore, only application R50 (methane) shown allow below 130 achieved, compression cascade system. For most investigated configurations, suction pressure must atmospheric thermally couple stages.
