Modelling Microplastics in the River Thames: Sources, Sinks and Policy Implications

چکیده

With widespread, long-term historical use of plastics and the presence microplastics in a range new existing products, there is rising concern about their potential impacts on freshwater ecosystems. Understanding how are transported distributed along river systems key to assessing impacts. Modelling main flow dynamics, mixing, sedimentation resuspension processes essential for an understanding transport processes. We new, processed based, dynamic, integrated catchments (INCA) model apply this whole catchment River Thames, UK, evaluate inputs, loads concentrations system. Recent data from UK water industry studies effluent discharges sewage sludge disposal has been utilised drive INCA model. Predicted microplastic moving system shown be significant, with build-up river, increasing deposition riverbed. The aquatic ecosystems evaluated review policy implications explored.

Modelling metaldehyde in catchments: a River Thames case-study.

The application of metaldehyde to agricultural catchment areas to control slugs and snails has caused severe problems for drinking water supply in recent years. In the River Thames catchment, metaldehyde has been detected at levels well above the EU and UK drinking water standards of 0.1 μg l-1 at many sites across the catchment between 2008 and 2015. Metaldehyde is applied in autumn and winter...

Sources and sinks of microplastics in Canadian Lake Ontario nearshore, tributary and beach sediments.

Microplastics contamination of Lake Ontario sediments is investigated with the aim of identifying distribution patterns and hotspots in nearshore, tributary and beach depositional environments. Microplastics are concentrated in nearshore sediments in the vicinity of urban and industrial regions. In Humber Bay and Toronto Harbour microplastic concentrations were consistently >500 particles per k...

Microplastics profile along the Rhine River

Microplastics result from fragmentation of plastic debris or are released to the environment as pre-production pellets or components of consumer and industrial products. In the oceans, they contribute to the 'great garbage patches'. They are ingested by many organisms, from protozoa to baleen whales, and pose a threat to the aquatic fauna. Although as much as 80% of marine debris originates fro...

Design rainfall modelling in the Thames catchment

Abstract This paper examines methodologies for the simulation of storms for the purpose of design flood generation in the Thames region. Existing methods are reviewed and two new approaches are proposed. One combines point profiles of storms extracted from long rainfall records with depth-duration-frequency statistics. The other uses a stochastic rainfall model based upon the Poisson point proc...
