Monocular Depth Ordering using Perceptual Occlusion Cues

In this paper we propose a method to estimate a global depth order between the objects of a scene using information from a single image coming from an uncalibrated camera. The method we present stems from early vision cues such as occlusion and convexity and uses them to infer both a local and a global depth order. Monocular occlusion cues, namely, T-junctions and convexities, contain informati...

Combining Monocular and Stereo Depth Cues

A lot of work has been done extracting depth from image sequences, and relatively less has been done using only single images. Very little has been done merging these together. This paper describes the fusing of depth estimation from two images, with monocular cues. The paper will provide an overview of the stereo algorithm, and the details of fusing the stereo range data with monocular image f...

Depth Estimation Using Monocular and Stereo Cues

Depth estimation in computer vision and robotics is most commonly done via stereo vision (stereopsis), in which images from two cameras are used to triangulate and estimate distances. However, there are also numerous monocular visual cues— such as texture variations and gradients, defocus, color/haze, etc.—that have heretofore been little exploited in such systems. Some of these cues apply even...

Stereoscopic depth aftereffect produced without monocular cues.

Random-dot stereograms when used as adaptation stimuli can influence the perceived depth of similar test stimuli. Adaptation for 1 minute is sufficient to evoke this three-dimensional aftereffect for several seconds. This aftereffect must occur after stereopsis because prior to stereopsis no relevant monocular cues exist in these adaptation and test stimuli.

Qualitative Estimation of Depth in Monocular Vision

In this paper we propose two techniques to qualitatively estimate distance in monocular vision. Two kinds of approaches are described, the former based on texture analysis and the latter on histogram inspection. Although both the methods allow only to determine whether a point within an image is nearer or farther than another with respect to the observer, they can be usefully exploited in all t...
