چکیده
Abstract In this article, we examine how group identity and protection of interests shape morality judgments. We argue that actions serving ingroup are more likely to be judged as moral (or less immoral) than the same do not serve interests. However, group-interest bias should especially strong among those high in collective narcissism—a defensive belief greatness is appreciated by others. Does cleanliness influence moral judgments? Response effort moderates the effect of cleanliness priming on moral judgments
Whether cleanliness influences moral judgments has recently become a topic of debate in the psychological literature. After the initial report that activating the notion of physical purity can result in less severe moral judgments (Schnall et al., 2008a), a direct replication (Johnson et al., 2014a) with much larger sample sizes failed to yield similar findings. The current paper examines the p...
متن کاملMoral kinematics: the role of physical factors in moral judgments.
Harmful events often have a strong physical component-for instance, car accidents, plane crashes, fist fights, and military interventions. Yet there has been very little systematic work on the degree to which physical factors influence our moral judgments about harm. Since physical factors are related to our perception of causality, they should also influence our subsequent moral judgments. In ...
متن کاملPredicting moral judgments from causal judgments∗
Several factors have been put forward to explain the variability of moral judgments for superficially analogous moral dilemmas, in particular in the paradigm of trolley cases. In this paper we elaborate on Mikhail’s view that (i) causal analysis is at the core of moral judgments and that (ii) causal judgments can be quantified by linguistic methods. According to this model, our moral judgments ...
متن کاملStriving for the moral self: the effects of recalling past moral actions on future moral behavior.
People's desires to see themselves as moral actors can contribute to their striving for and achievement of a sense of self-completeness. The authors use self-completion theory to predict (and show) that recalling one's own (im)moral behavior leads to compensatory rather than consistent moral action as a way of completing the moral self. In three studies, people who recalled their immoral behavi...
متن کاملDoes Cleanliness Influence Moral Judgments?
Schnall, Benton, and Harvey (2008) hypothesized that physical cleanliness reduces the severity of moral judgments. In support of this idea, they found that individuals make less severe judgments when they are primed with the concept of cleanliness (Exp. 1) and when they wash their hands after experiencing disgust (Exp. 2). We conducted direct replications of both studies using materials supplie...
