چکیده
Abstract Here, we aimed to define ecological indicators of environmental change for monitoring the effect a reintroduced species, Iberian ibex ( Capra pyrenaica ), over vegetation natural protected area with contrasting habitats. This species was 30 years ago in Sierra de Guadarrama National Park, Spain, and its population has since grown exponentially, reaching high densities some areas. We tested suitability two complementary indicators: browsing damage on woody percentage moss cover loss rocky outcrops. For this purpose, used mathematical approach zone according historical presence established five different pressure classes (Classes I–V). Our results showed direct link between status. Model predictions suggested 10% areas low (Class I) but 64% III), mostly due ungulate trampling rocks. Similarly, increased increasing species. Low palatable plant such as Pinus spp. little whereas more plants (e.g., Erica arborea ) significantly greater variation across (i.e., sensitive herbivory pressure). Both, rocks widely distributed proved useful populations mountainous diverse array habitats vs. woody). methodology may help select most suitable each type ecosystem or dominant habitat ungulate-dominated ecosystems.

Resource partitioning between ungulate populations in arid environments
Herbivores are major drivers of ecosystem structure, diversity, and function. Resilient ecosystems therefore require viable herbivore populations in a sustainable balance with environmental resource availability. This balance is becoming harder to achieve, with increasingly threatened species reliant on small protected areas in increasingly harsh and unpredictable environments. Arid environment...
متن کاملEstimating Fractional Snow Cover in Mountain Environments with Fuzzy Classification
The disproportionate amount of water runoff from mountains to surrounding arid and semiarid lands has generated much research in snow water equivalent (SWE) modeling. A primary input in SWE models is snow covered area (SCA) which is generally obtained via satellite imagery. Mixed pixels in alpine snow studies complicate SCA measurements and can reduce accuracy. A simple method was developed to ...
متن کاملRegulating overabundant ungulate populations: an example for elk in Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado.
In many areas of the world, populations of native ungulates have become so abundant that they are believed to be harming vegetation and disrupting ecosystem function. Methods for controlling overabundance populations include culling animals from the population and controlling fertility using contraceptives. However, understanding the feasibility these alternatives requires insight into their lo...

The spatial structure of plant communities as well as the quality and abundance of neighbours can strongly influence the intensity of herbivory suffered by a plant. In this paper, we study the effect of the association with shrubs on the ungulate herbivory suffered by Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris var. nevadensis Christ., Pinaceae) saplings in two isolated, fragmented populations in southeastern...
