Multi-phase gas properties of extremely strong intervening DLAs towards quasars

We present the results of a spectroscopic analysis extremely strong damped Lyman-{\alpha} absorbers (ESDLAs, log N(Hi)>=21.7) observed with VLT-XShooter. ESDLAs probe gas from within star-forming disk associated galaxies and thus provide unique opportunity to study interstellar medium at high-redshift. report column densities (N), equivalent widths (w), kinematic spread ({\Delta} v90) species neutral, singly ionised, higher ionisation species. find that, using dust correction prescription, measured metallicities are consistent for ionised such as Pii, S ii, Si Mnii Crii, Znii in all 3-sigma uncertainty. that distributions N(Ari)/N(Hi) ratio DLAs similar. further do not show deficiency Ari relative other {\alpha}-capture elements is seen DLAs. This supports idea mentioned under-abundance possibly caused by presence background UV photons penetrate low N(Hi) clouds ionise Ari, but they cannot deep enough high ESDLA environment. The w(Mgii lambda2796) distribution found be similar metal-rich Ci-selected absorbers, velocity their Mgii profile different. For (such C iv iv), {\Delta} v90 two populations, while smaller ESDLAs. suggests sample different Hi region galaxy compared general DLA population. N(Cl i) high-redshift sightlines, Cl i good tracer H2 gas. i)-N(H2) correlation followed (ESDLAs otherwise) having N(H2)<22.

We report on the detection of Ne viii in an intervening multiphase absorption line system at z = 0.32566 in the FUSE spectrum of the quasar 3C 263 (zem = 0.646).
