Multiple environmental benefits of alternate wetting and drying irrigation system with limited yield impact on European rice cultivation: The Ebre Delta case

چکیده

The AWD is an irrigation technology for rice cultivation, consisting in implementing alternate draining and flooded periods over the growing season, that delivers multiple environmental benefits, such as reduced water consumption, CH 4 emissions arsenic (As) grain content, but can be offset by yield losses. trade-offs between agronomic effects of are crop context-dependent they also vary among different versions studied. Therefore, implementation a safe needs to preceded studies conducted within specific cropping system. A two-year field experiment was assess effect on yield, As heavy metal content grains, greenhouse gas nine representative European cultivars grown Mediterranean area. performed split-plot design with four replications. study revealed significant cultivar response AWD. Among studied cultivars, one them tolerant while group formed showed slight non-significant decline. significantly global warming potential 90% being large mitigation capacity explained negligible N 2 O found both treatments . Finally, ca. 40% concentration increased cadmium though levels remained below recommended thresholds. Further, key nutritional elements like cupper, selenium, zinc. In conclusion, this confirms safely implemented cultivation conditions limited or null impact obtaining associated benefits practice • GWP 90%. Arsenic 40%. Grain maintained under implemented.

Alternate wetting and drying irrigation for rice cultivation

A field experiment was conducted at the Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) to find out possible effects of alternate wetting and drying irrigation (AWDI) on the yield, water use and water use efficiency (WUE) of Boro rice. The experimental layout was furnitured using split-plot design (SPD) with two modern varieties (MV) of rice viz. BRRIdhan 28 and BRRIdhan 29, which received four irriga...

Involvement of cytokinins in the grain filling of rice under alternate wetting and drying irrigation.

Cytokinins may reflect soil water status and regulate rice (Oryza sativa L.) grain filling. This study investigated the changes in cytokinin levels in rice plants and their relations with grain filling under alternate wetting and drying irrigation. Two 'super' rice cultivars were field grown. Three irrigation regimes, alternate wetting and moderate soil drying (WMD), alternate wetting and sever...

Root Traits Enhancing Rice Grain Yield under Alternate Wetting and Drying Condition

Reducing water requirements and lowering environmental footprints require attention to minimize risks to food security. The present study was conducted with the aim to identify appropriate root traits enhancing rice grain yield under alternate wetting and drying conditions (AWD) and identify stable, high-yielding genotypes better suited to the AWD across variable ecosystems. Advanced breeding l...

The Effects of Repeated Soil Wetting and Drying on Lowland Rice Yield with System of Rice Intensification (SRI) Methods

In lowland rice farming, water control is the most important management practice that determines the efficacy of other production inputs such as nutrients, herbicides, pesticides, farm machines, microbial activity, mineralization rate, etc. Poor drainage that keeps soil saturated is detrimental to crops and degrades soil quality. In many rice irrigation systems, drainage mechanisms and practice...
