Multivariate localization functions for strongly coupled data assimilation in the bivariate Lorenz 96 system

چکیده
Abstract. Localization is widely used in data assimilation schemes to mitigate the impact of sampling errors on ensemble-derived background error covariance matrices. Strongly coupled allows observations one component a model directly another through inclusion cross-domain terms matrix. When different components have disparate dominant spatial scales, localization between domains must properly account for multiple length scales at play. In this work, we develop two new multivariate functions, which extension fifth-order piecewise rational Gaspari–Cohn function; within-component functions are standard with radii, while cross-localization function newly constructed. The produce positive semidefinite matrices suitable use both Kalman filters and variational schemes. We compare performance our other univariate weakly analogs all four simple experiment bivariate Lorenz 96 system. experiments, leads better than any functions.

Bivariate and Multivariate Functions
For functions depending on two variables, we automatically construct tri6 angulations subject to the condition that the continuous, piecewise linear approxi7 mation, underor overestimation never deviates more than a given δ -tolerance from 8 the original function over a given domain. This tolerance is ensured by solving sub9 problems over each triangle to global optimality. The continuous, piec...
متن کاملClassical Methods Tour of Advanced Data Assimilation using Lorenz ‘ 96 Model Final
Using Lorenz96 model with 40 variables, classical methods of advanced data assimilation are explained, implemented and examined. The classical methods include full Kalman filter (KF), extended Kalman filter (EKF), full Kalman smoother (KS), its iterative versions, and sawtooth algorithms (Johnston and Kurishnamurthy 2001). A brief explanation of the theoretical background of ensemble Kalman fil...

A short review of some of the most relevant contributions to non-perturbative QED is done. Since a Gaussian behaviour of QEDà la λφ 4 has been ruled out by the numerical data, I analyse the other two most reliable scenarios, i.e. trivialityà la Nambu-Jona Lasinio and non-Gaussian critical behaviour. I give a suggestive theoretical argument against a Gaussian behaviour of QEDà la Nambu-Jona Lasi...
متن کاملStochastic parametrizations and model uncertainty in the Lorenz '96 system.
Simple chaotic systems are useful tools for testing methods for use in numerical weather simulations owing to their transparency and computational cheapness. The Lorenz system was used here; the full system was defined as 'truth', whereas a truncated version was used as a testbed for parametrization schemes. Several stochastic parametrization schemes were investigated, including additive and mu...
متن کاملAdvanced Data Assimilation for Strongly Nonlinear Dynamics
Advanced data assimilation methods become extremely complicated and challenging when used with strongly nonlinear models. Several previous works have reported various problems when applying existing popular data assimilation techniques with strongly nonlinear dynamics. Common for these techniques is that they can all be considered as extensions to methods that have proved to work well with line...
