Remembering the past is not as straight forward it might appear. The histories that we choose to retell and privilege speak contemporary concerns. For Rangitāne, Ngāti Kuia Apa, indigenous peoples of northern South Island Aotearoa New Zealand, history political. Histories are recounted in present for a purpose, is, maintain mana (prestige, authority, influence) community whom belong. This article touches on some recent examples speaking present.
