Near?Zero Index Photonic Crystals with Directive Bound States in the Continuum

Near-zero-index platforms arise as a new opportunity for light manipulation with boosting of optical nonlinearities, transmission properties in waveguides, and constant phase distribution. In addition, they represent solution to impedance mismatch faced photonic circuitry offering several applications quantum photonics, communication, sensing. However, their realization is limited the availability materials that could exhibit such low index. For used visible near-infrared wavelengths, intrinsic losses annihilate most near-zero index properties. The design all-dielectric crystals specific electromagnetic modes overcomes issue while showing effective mode near zero. Nonetheless, these strongly radiate surrounding environment, greatly limiting devices applications. Here, novel crystal structure explored able sustain near-zero-index coupled directive bound-states continuum order decrease radiative losses, opening extraordinary opportunities radiation nanophotonic circuits. Moreover, its relatively simple stability facilitate integration reproducibility other components.
