Negative treatment of self in socially anxious clients

Exploring and working with the quality of a person’s self-relationship is central to therapeutic process. Whilst research has often focused upon measurement concepts such as self-criticism, perfectionism self-efficacy, there been limited study how self-relationship, particularly it relates negative treatment self (NTS), presents itself in discourse within therapy sessions. The current was intended examine broader concept socially anxious clients who participated on emotion-focused for social anxiety (EFT-SA). Utilising client self-report measure, four participants were selected based high pre-therapy scores respective domains self-attack, self-control, self-neglect self-affiliation. We carried out qualitative descriptive-interpretative analyses session 2 transcripts each participant identify main themes self-treatment. This investigation revealed both obvious subtle process indicators different aspects NTS: Objects (Being, Doing, Having), Directness (Direct vs Indirect), Modes (Self-Attack, Hostile Control, Neglect & Freedom), Emotional Effects (Fear, Sadness, Anger, Shame). In addition mapping nuances, varying dimensions incorporated into comprehensive definition self.
