New approach for predicting nitrification and its fraction of N2O emissions in global terrestrial ecosystems

چکیده

Abstract Nitrification is a major pathway of N 2 O production in aerobic soils. Measurements and model simulations nitrification associated emission are challenging. Here we innovatively integrated data mining machine learning to predict rate ( R nit ) the fraction as emissions ${f_{{{\text{N}}_{\text{2}}}{{\text{O}}_{{\text{Nit}}}}}}$?> f N 2 O Nit ). Using our global database on , found that machine-learning based stochastic gradient boosting (SGB) outperformed three widely used process-based models estimating from nitrification. We then applied SGB technique for prediction. The potential was driven by long-term mean annual temperature, soil C/N ratio pH, whereas precipitation, clay content, total N. varied over 200 times (0.006%–1.2%), which challenges common practice using constant value models. This study provides insights into advancing projecting dynamics greenhouse gas approach.

Measuring nitrification, denitrification, and related biomarkers in terrestrial geothermal ecosystems.

Research on the nitrogen biogeochemical cycle in terrestrial geothermal ecosystems has recently been energized by the discovery of thermophilic ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA). This chapter describes methods that have been used for measuring nitrification and denitrification in hot spring environments, including isotope pool dilution and tracer approaches, and the acetylene block approach. The ...

An inventory of global N2O emissions from the soils of natural terrestrial ecosystems

We develop an inventory of global N2O emissions from natural ecosystem soils using an artificial neural network approach and field observational data of N2O fluxes. We estimate that the global soil N2O source strength from natural ecosystems is 3.37 Tg (1 Tg 1⁄4 1012 g) N per year with an uncertainty ranging from 1.96 to 4.56 Tg N per year in 2000. While our global estimate is lower than other ...

Global Warming and Terrestrial Ecosystems: A Conceptual Framework for Analysis

raise global mean temperature over the next century by 1.0–3.5 °C (Houghton et al. 1995, 1996). Ecologists from around the world have begun experiments to investigate the effects of global warming on terrestrial ecosystems, the aspect of global climate change that attracts the most public attention (Woodwell and McKenzie 1995, Walker and Steffen 1999). The effort to understand response to warmi...

Global patterns of root turnover for terrestrial ecosystems

Root turnover is a critical component of ecosystem nutrient dynamics and carbon sequestration and is also an important sink for plant primary productivity. We tested global controls on root turnover across climatic gradients and for plant functional groups by using a database of 190 published studies. Root turnover rates increased exponentially with mean annual temperature for fine roots of gra...

Comparison of models for predicting nitrification, denitrification and nitrous oxide emissions in pastoral systems

Intensification of agricultural systems has resulted in remarkable increases in productivity. However in grazed systems only about 10-20% of the N ingested by grazing animals is retained in animal products. The reminder is returned in excreta to the paddock in a spatially non-uniform fashion as dung and urine and then either accumulates in the soil or is lost via leaching or gaseous emissions. ...
