Abstract Original techniques are proposed for the improvement of surface current mapping with phased-array oceanographic high-frequency radars. The first idea, which works only in bistatic configuration, is to take advantage a remote transmitter perform an automatic correction receiving antennas based on signal received direct path, adjustment that designated as “self-calibration.” second applies both mono- and systems, consists applying direction finding (DF) technique (instead traditional beamforming), not full antenna array but also subarrays made smaller number sequential antennas, method referred “antenna grouping.” In doing this, sources can be varied, leading increased DF maps averaged, operation “source stacking.” combination self-calibration, grouping, source stacking makes it possible obtain high-resolution coverage found robust damaged antennas. third concerns mitigation noise signal.
