Nipah Virus Strain Variation

although this practice is not effective. Snails and slugs withdrew from produce after the molluscicide was applied to surrounding vegetation, but returned after several days. We purchased a lettuce head that had been reportedly treated with molluscicides at the Coronation Market and found a small slug inside. The role of produce in transmitting A. cantonensis is still unclear; humans may become...

Coronaviruses Induce Entry-Independent, Continuous Macropinocytosis

Macropinocytosis is exploited by many pathogens for entry into cells. Coronaviruses (CoVs) such as severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) CoV and Middle East respiratory syndrome CoV are important human pathogens; however, macropinocytosis during CoV infection has not been investigated. We demonstrate that the CoVs SARS CoV and murine hepatitis virus (MHV) induce macropinocytosis, which occur...

Bat Nipah Virus, Thailand

Surveillance for Nipah virus (NV) was conducted in Thailand's bat population. Immunoglobulin G antibodies to NV were detected with enzyme immunoassay in 82 of 1,304 bats. NV RNA was found in bat saliva and urine. These data suggest the persistence of NV infection in Thai bats.

Nipah Virus Infection

Nipah virus infection is an emerging disease endemic in Southeast Asia. This virus is carried subclinically in fruit bats of the genus Pteropus, a host to which it seems well adapted. Illnesses caused by Nipah virus were first described in 19981999, during widespread outbreaks among pigs and people in Malaysia. The virus had apparently been transmitted from bats to pigs around 1996, and was the...
