Nitric oxide pretreatment enhances ofloxacin susceptibility of biofilm concomitant with exopolysaccharide depletion

When faced with the dilemma that safe, cheap, and plentiful antibiotics failed in fighting obstinate biofilm, progress has been made to use low-dose nitric oxide (NO) as adjunctive therapy for enhancing antibiotic efficacy. To further potentiate against we investigated sequential role of NO ofloxacin treat Pseudomonas aeruginosa biofilm. Here showed pretreatment rendered eradicate recalcitrant increasing efficacy up 3 orders magnitude. It proceeded by reducing exopolysaccharides within biofilm which facilitated dispersal. Additionally, verified could improve therapeutic vivo a chronic lung infection model. We believe strategy will provide powerful demonstration eradication, highlighting delivery bactericides combat bacterial infection.
