Nonlinear amplification of side-modes in frequency combs.
We investigate how suppressed modes in frequency combs are modified upon frequency doubling and self-phase modulation. We find, both experimentally and by using a simplified model, that these side-modes are amplified relative to the principal comb modes. Whereas frequency doubling increases their relative strength by 6 dB, the growth due to self-phase modulation can be much stronger and general...
متن کاملPhononic frequency combs through nonlinear resonances.
We explore an analogue of optical frequency combs in driven nonlinear phononic systems, and present a mechanism for generating phononic frequency combs through nonlinear resonances. In the underlying process, a set of phonon modes is simultaneously excited by the external driving which yields frequency combs with an array of discrete and equidistant spectral lines of each nonlinearly excited ph...
متن کاملNonlinear frequency combs generated by cnoidal waves in microring resonators
Cnoidal waves are the periodic analog of solitons. Like solitons, they can be generated in microresonators and correspond to frequency combs. The generation of frequency combs in nonlinear microresonators is modeled by the Lugiato–Lefever equation. In this paper, we study the Lugiato–Lefever equation for a microresonator in the anomalous dispersion regime. In the lossless case, we show that the...
متن کاملFrequency-noise measurements of optical frequency combs by multiple fringe-side discriminator
The frequency noise of an optical frequency comb is routinely measured through the hetherodyne beat of one comb tooth against a stable continuous-wave laser. After frequency-to-voltage conversion, the beatnote is sent to a spectrum analyzer to retrive the power spectral density of the frequency noise. Because narrow-linewidth continuous-wave lasers are available only at certain wavelengths, het...
متن کاملTerahertz laser frequency combs
The development of optical frequency combs has had a revolutionary impact on high-precision metrology and spectroscopy, and the development was recognized with a Nobel Prize in 2005. At visible and near-infrared frequencies, the combs are often formed based on mode-locked lasers whose periodic pulse trains in the time domain naturally lead to frequency combs from the duality relation in Fourier...
