Novel Mg-Bi-Mn wrought alloys: The effects of extrusion temperature and Mn addition on their microstructures and mechanical properties

Designing and developing the Mg alloys with low cost high performance is of great significance. Novel Mg-1Bi-xMn (x = 0, 1 2 wt.%) extruded alloys, in this work, were fabricated at different extrusion temperatures (220, 250 300 °C). The effects temperature Mn addition on microstructures mechanical properties room investigated. results showed that decreasing could refine average grain size, weaken basal fiber texture intensity improve microstructural homogeneity alloys. When element was added to Mg-1Bi alloy, size further reduced. Simultaneously, number fraction angle boundaries (LAGBs) increased, along occurrence regions without dynamic recrystallization (unDRX). combined refinement coarse unDRXed structure made textures never obviously change. Besides few large un-dissolved second phases, fine Mg3Bi2 α-Mn phases precipitated partial nano-scale particles pined (GBs) effectively impede migration GBs for refinement. Microstructural variations determined Mg-1Bi-2Mn alloy exhibit highest yield strength ∼ 319.2 MPa appropriate elongation-to-failure 13% 220 °C, they enabled Mg-1Bi-1Mn show 26% obvious loss 252.1 MPa.
