چکیده

The kinematic wave model under the assumption of balanced gravity and friction forces has been applied in open channel hydraulics surface hydrology. There persists a severe misunderstanding that discontinuity occurs due to input then dissipates. This study clarifies can develop without dissipation smoothness all input. theory first-order quasilinear partial differential equations shows Cauchy problems for have unique measurable bounded solutions, which are possibly discontinuous. Numerical examples presented visualize fundamental properties discontinuous waves.

Improved Estimates of Kinematic Wave Parameters for Circular Channels

The momentum equation in the kinematic wave model is a power-law equation with two parameters. These parameters, which relate the discharge to the flow area, are commonly derived using Manning’s equation. In general, the values of these parameters depend on the flow depth except for some special cross sections. In this paper, improved estimates of the kinematic wave parameters for circular chan...

Unsteady turbulent properties in negative waves in open channels

In an open channel, a sudden drop in free-surface elevation is associated with the development of a negative wave. While some simple analytical solution is widely described in textbooks, little research was conducted to date on the unsteady turbulence properties beneath negative waves. A series of new physical experiments were conducted in a rectangular channel. The unsteady free-surface profil...

Development of Non-Dissipative Numerical Schemes for Computational Aeroacoustics

The ability of popular computational fluid dynamic (CFD) methods t o simulate the propagation of acoustic waves is assessed both theoretically and by numerical experiment. The schemes are used to model acoustic waves generated by a noise source situated at the aft end of a convergent-divergent nozzle. It is found that the acoustic signal that traverses up the nozzle has difficulty maintaining i...

Numerical Calculations of Ship Induced Waves

Nowadays, various numerical methods are developed to extend computational fluid dynamics in engineering applications. One of the most useful methods in free surface modeling is Boundary Element Method (BEM). BEM is used to model inviscid fluid flow such as flow around ships. BEM solutions employ surface mesh at all of the boundaries. In order to model the linear free surface, BEM can be modifie...

Negative Surges in Open Channels: Physical and Numerical Modeling

Negative surges can be caused by a sudden change in flow resulting from a decrease in water depth. In the present study, some physical experiments were conducted in a rectangular channel to characterize the unsteady free-surface profile and longitudinal velocity beneath a negative surge propagating upstream. The physical observations showed that, during the first initial instants, the celerity ...
