Numerical, spatial and material magnitude estimation in left and right brain-damaged patients

چکیده

In this study, we tested the main prediction derived from “A Theory Of Magnitude” or ATOM, according to which discrete (e.g., numbers) and continuous space, material) magnitudes are processed within right hemisphere. To do so, examined 11 brain-damaged patients, 19 left 30 healthy subjects on different tasks assessing magnitude estimation: symbolic non-symbolic numerical as well spatial (i.e., length) material weight) magnitude. Contrary ATOM’s predictions, did not find significant correlations between all estimation in patients. Correlations length were found patients subjects. Our results support existence of a partial independence forms processing.

Right unilateral spatial neglect of the left brain-damaged patients.

Right unilateral spatial neglect (USN) was investigated on three left brain-damaged patients suffering from the right homonymous hemianopsia and hemiplegia. A test battery consisted of visuo-constructive praxis; 1) putting blocks into a box, 2) bisecting a horizontal line, 3) figure drawing, 4) drawing of a dial plate and 5) copying drawing. The investigation revealed that USN of left brain-dam...

Acalculia, aphasia and spatial disorders in left and right brain-damaged patients.

The paper reports the performance of 50 left- and 26 vascular right-brain-damaged (LBD, RBD) patients in the EC301 Calculation Battery, which explores different aspects of number and calculation processing. All patients underwent a comprehensive neuropsychological testing that also included evaluation for the presence and type of aphasia in LBD patients, and of spatial disorders in RBD patients...

Severity and Co-occurrence of Oral and Verbal Apraxias in Left Brain Damaged Adults

Objective: Oral and verbal apraxias represent motor programming deficits of nonverbal and verbal movements respectively. Studying their properties may shed light on speech motor control processes. This study was focused on identifying cases with oral or verbal apraxia, their co–occurrences and severities. Materials & Methods: In this non-experimental study, 55 left adult subjects with left b...

Syntactic Development of Right-Brain and Left-Brain Dominant Iranian EFL Learners: Processability Theory in Perspective

Processability Theory, a component of the cognitive approach to second language acquisition tries to enhance understanding of how the interlanguage knowledge systems can be restructured by second language learners (Pienemann, 1998, 2015). The present study intended to run a similar investigation into the syntactic development of Right-Brain and Left-Brain Dominant Iranian EFL learners based on ...

Numerical and Non-numerical Magnitude Estimation

Despite a heated debate regarding a cognitive mechanism of magnitude representation, little has been done to directly compare numerical and non-numerical estimation and provide a unified account of the two processes. In the current study, we examined estimation of numerical and non-numerical quantities on a continuum using various psychophysical functions. Inconsistent with the proportion reaso...
