Nutrient cycling in tropical and temperate coastal waters: Is latitude making a difference?

چکیده
Tropical coastal waters are highly dynamic and amongst the most biogeochemically active zones in ocean. This review compares nitrogen (N) phosphorus (P) cycles temperate tropical waters. We literature to identify major similarities differences between these two regions, specifically with regards impact of environmental factors (temperature, sunlight), riverine inputs, groundwater, lateral fluxes, atmospheric deposition, fixation, organic nutrient cycling, primary production, respiration, sedimentary burial, denitrification anammox. Overall, there some but also key relating mainly temperature, sunlight, precipitation amounts patterns. conclude that due biogeochemical processes, we cannot directly apply cause effect relationships models from systems Our highlights considerable gaps knowledge processes compared systems. Given ecological societal importance waters, hope highlighting as well existing gaps, will inspire further studies on their processes. Such be essential better understand forecast impacts cycling at local, regional, global scales.

Eutrophication and macroalgal blooms in temperate and tropical coastal waters: nutrient enrichment experiments with Ulva spp.
Receiving coastal waters and estuaries are among the most nutrient-enriched environments on earth, and one of the symptoms of the resulting eutrophication is the proliferation of opportunistic, fast-growing marine seaweeds. Here, we used a widespread macroalga often involved in blooms, Ulva spp., to investigate how supply of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P), the two main potential growth-limitin...
متن کاملEcological traps in shallow coastal waters—Potential effect of heat-waves in tropical and temperate organisms
Mortality of fish has been reported in tide pools during warm days. That means that tide pools are potential ecological traps for coastal organisms, which happen when environmental changes cause maladaptive habitat selection. Heat-waves are predicted to increase in intensity, duration and frequency, making it relevant to investigate the role of tide pools as traps for coastal organisms. However...
متن کاملMicrobial and nutrient pollution of coastal bathing waters in Mauritius.
The coastal pollution problem in Mauritius is exacerbated by the hydrogeology of the volcanic substratum. Bacterial contamination of bathing waters and nutrients, water temperature, salinity, and dissolved oxygen (DO) were monitored at three different spatial and temporal scales along the coastline of Mauritius during 1997-1998. Standard techniques for water sample collection and analysis set b...
متن کاملCauses and Consequences of Nutrient Overenrichment of Coastal Waters
While developed societies made significant progress in reducing the discharge of many wastes— including industrial wastes, organic matter in sewage, sludge, contaminated sediments and other material dumped at sea, toxic compounds, and oil— into coastal waters, nutrient over-enrichment intensified and spread widely among the planet’s coastal environments during the last half of the 20 century. T...
