Offshore Windfarm Design Optimization Using Dynamic Rating for Transmission Components

The foreseen development of large-scale Offshore Windfarms (OWFs) further from the shore dictates that OWF transmission system must be optimally designed based on Dynamic Thermal Rating (DTR) in order to fully utilize intermittent nature wind and keep offshore cost-competitive. In this paper, a comprehensive, DTR-based, two-stage stochastic model is presented, which has been developed for investment decision support size HVAC systems. Complex DTR models all critical HV components are made fit mixed-integer linear programming problem, while accounting stochasticity generation component availability. main decisions incorporate discrete OWFs, subsea export cable cross-sections ratings transformers shunt reactors. For validation, an actual testcase off east coast U.K. used. Results indicate DTR-based iterative design its can significantly improve business case, even though efficiency energy delivered not maximum optimal
