On Spray Modeling with Quadrature‐Based Moment Methods

Abstract Spray modeling requires a proper representation of the dispersed phase and involves models for variety physical phenomena. On population scale, properly formulated balance equation provides complete statistical description particle system. However, in most cases high dimensionality entails prohibitive computational costs. Quadrature‐based moment methods (QBMM) limit populations to set only few moments thus considerably reduce complexity. In order apply QBMM sprays, many involved processes must be consistently QBMM‐context. We study secondary droplet breakup with using simple well‐established spray model simplified setups.

In this work we show that moment methods devised to solve the Boltzmann kinetic equation for a simple gas exhibit some inconsistencies. This puzzle, which also appears for the Chapman-Enskog method, is solved resorting to a perturbative expansion in the Knudsen number, thus allowing for a clear way to arrive at a closure condition.
