On the Suitability of NOx-Storage-Catalysts for Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engines and a Radio Frequency-Based NOx Loading Monitoring

Abstract Hydrogen combustion engines can contribute to CO 2 -free mobility. However, they produce NO x emissions, albeit only an extremely small extent when operated very leanly. One approach reduce these emissions even further is use exhaust gas aftertreatment systems like storage catalysts (NSC). So far, have mainly been used in diesel or gasoline applications. This contribution shows that under conditions such as those prevailing hydrogen engines, the NSC achieve not a higher capacity for nitrogen oxides (NO ) but also conversion. To ensure permanently high conversion rates, amount of stored has be monitored prevent breakthroughs. Conventional sensors may accurate enough due low emissions. The functionality radio frequency (RF) sensor, which enables direct determination loading, demonstrated operation conditions. Furthermore, influence rich on RF signal, relevant correct loading during regeneration, analyzed.
