Optical Characterization of Mineral Dust from the EAIIST Project with Digital Holography

We describe an optical approach based on Digital Holography for single-particle characterization of mineral dust and micrometric particles, focusing the analysis airborne particles in meltwater from Antarctic ice cores. record holograms formed by superposition transilluminating reference beam waves scattered single particles. Taking a cue recent approaches field holography methods, we process to recover both morphological properties grains. As considerable advantage over traditional light-scattering-based give extinction cross section each particle and, numerically reconstructing wavefront propagation, unambiguous image whereby derive its cross-sectional shape size. Measurements have been carried out samples collected EAIIST (East International Ice Sheet Traverse) project, some which show evidence volcanic events. The vast majority detected significant deviations isometric shape, as confirmed reconstruction analysis. By our analysis, observe that experimental data up 3 times lower than spherical with same volume. Therefore, these appreciable impact aerosol contribution radiative forcing: retrieving may improve modeling reduce associated uncertainties.
