Optical resonances in graded index spheres: A resonant-state-expansion study and analytic approximations

چکیده
Recent improvements in the resonant-state expansion (RSE), focusing on static mode contribution, have made it possible to treat transverse-magnetic (TM) modes of a spherically symmetric system with same efficiency as their transverse-electric (TE) counterparts. We demonstrate here that efficient inclusion RSE results its quick convergence exact solution regardless set used. then apply systems continuous radial variations permittivity. show TM polarization, spectral transition from whispering gallery Fabry-Perot is characterized by peak losses and an additional compared TE polarization. Both features are explained quantitatively Brewster angle surface reflection which occurs this frequency range. Eliminating discontinuity at sphere using linear or quadratic profiles permittivity modifies increases losses, qualitative agreement reduced reflectivity. These also provide nearly parabolic confinement for modes, analytical approximation Morse potential presented. result TE-TM splitting, shown be further suppressed choosing profile radially extending fields. Light propagation in graded-index optical fibers.
An accurate numerical method is described for solving the Helmholtz equation for a general class of optical fibers. The method yields detailed information about the spatial and angular properties of the propagating beam as well as the modal propagation constants for the fiber. The method is applied to a practical graded-index fiber under the assumptions of both coherent and incoherent illuminat...

We present a framework to systematically study the duality properties of scatterers. The duality properties of a scatterer are related to the polarization change that a particle excerpts on a light beam. Our formalism can be applied to any geometry and material, but we develop it in the context of spherical scatterers. Due to their symmetries, we can formulate the problem semi-analytically usin...

We propose a method to obtain the resonance frequencies of coupled optical modes for a stack of two periodically corrugated slabs. The method is based on the modes in each slab, which are derived by the Fourier modal method in combination with the optical scattering matrix theory. We then use the resonant mode approximation of the scattering matrices to develop a linear eigenvalue problem with ...

Plastic Optical Fiber Perfluorinated graded-index polymer optical fibers (GI-POFs) combine high data transmission rates and low attenuation in the commercially desirable 850–1300nm range. GI-POFs offer a direct replacement and a low cost alternative to traditional glass. With ease of use and affordability, GI-POFs make an excellent choice for the installation of high performance fiber networks....
