Optimization of GMAW Process Parameters in Ultra-High-Strength Steel Based on Prediction

Ultra-high-strength steel (UHSS) is a complex and sophisticated material that allows the development of products with reduced weight but increased strength can assist, for example, in automotive industry, saving fuel vehicles decreasing greenhouse gas emissions. Welding UHSS has certain complexity, mainly due to higher alloys heat treatments involved, which result microstructure sensitivity welding. The primary purpose current work was select best parameters metal arc welding (GMAW) S960 based on prediction methods. To achieve expected results, finite element analysis (FEA) used simulate evaluate results. It found and, consequently, input derived from process greatly affected microstructure. Using FEA estimating extension heat-affected zone (HAZ), peak temperature, even effect distortion shrinkage possible. With an increase 8.4 kJ/cm, estimated cooling rate around 70 °C/s. presence softening area coarse grain (CGHAZ) welded joints identified. These results led carbon content (3.4%) compared base metal. could help predict behaviors or microstructures few changes parameters.
