Osmiophilic structure in pigment-producing Flavobacterium mutants.

A highly osmiophilic structure observed in all pigment-producing mutants of Flavobacterium examined is described. Several factors favor the possibility that this structure might be related to pigment synthesis or pigment accumulation.

Producing Mutant of Flavobacterium rigense

Properties of some enzymes involved in L-glutamine biosynthesis in an Lglutamine-producing mutant of Flavobacterium rigense were examined. Glutamate-oxaloacetate transaminase in the mutant was nearly at the same level as that in the parent strain and was the most active among the enzymes participating in glutamate biosynthesis from a-ketoglutarate. Glutamine synthetase formation in the mutant w...

Menaquinone (vitamin K2)-6 production by mutants of Flavobacterium meningosepticum.

Flavobacterium meningosepticum IFO 12535, a menaquinone (MK) producer, was mutagenized to improve productivity. A mutant, which was resistant to 1-hydroxy-2-naphthoate (HNA), was found to produce MK more abundantly: 34 mg/liter of culture broth and 5.5 mg/g of dry cells. The mutant was less sensitive to inhibition by HNA on MK biosynthesis than the wild-type strain. MK was isolated from cells o...

Hepatic Intracellular Osmiophilic Droplets

Lipid solvent extraction of aldehyde-fixed hepatic tissue of rats caused disappearance of all intravascular and hepatocellular osmiophilic droplets normally present, thus indicating their lipid content. Intramitochondrial dense granules and osmiophilic droplets in lysosomes also disappeared after this treatment. Lipid solvents extracted 43.8 to 92.6% of the radioactivity from aldehyde-fixed rat...

Light Harvesting in Anacystis nidulans Studied in Pigment Mutants.

Spontaneous pigment mutants of Anacystis nidulans were self-selected for improved growth in far red light (> 650 nanometers). Questions were asked about those features of the light-harvesting mechanism which altered to give the mutants improved photosynthetic performance in far red. Answers were sought by comparing pigment and reaction center concentrations for the parent and six mutants grown ...
