Parameter estimation bias from overlapping binary black hole events in second generation interferometers

چکیده
Since the initial detection of gravitational waves in 2015, over 50 candidate events have been reported by LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA collaboration. As current generation detectors move toward their design sensitivity, rate these detections will increase. The next are likely to high enough sensitivities that multiple merging binaries be visible at same time. In this paper we show is happen before end decade, during observations LIGO-Voyager detector. We investigate situation overlapping binary black hole (BBH) mergers detectors. find parameter estimation techniques capable distinguishing louder two BBH events, without significant bias, when merger times not less than $\ensuremath{\sim}0.1$ seconds apart or ratio signal-to-noise ratios systems uneven. This region space dependent upon sky locations signals and relation those light travel time between also that, if highly overlapping, then recovered set parameters often strong evidence precession. Finally, bias can occur even signal causing below threshold.

We discuss a new N-body simulation method for studying black hole binary dynamics. This method avoids previous numerical problems due to large mass ratios and trapped orbits with short periods. A treatment of relativistic effects is included when the associated time-scale becomes small. Preliminary results with up to N = 2.4×10 particles are obtained showing systematic eccentricity growth until...

www.physicstoday.org After decades of effort, numerical relativists can now simulate the inspiral and merger of two black holes orbiting each other. That computational triumph has come none too soon—physicists are on the verge of detecting gravitational waves for the first time, and at long last they know what to look for. Black holes are strong-field objects whose properties are governed by Ei...

Abstract We study parameter estimation with post-Newtonian (PN) gravitational waveforms for the quasicircular, adiabatic inspiral of spinning binary compact objects. In particular, the performance of amplitude-corrected waveforms is compared with that of the more commonly used restricted waveforms, in Advanced LIGO and EGO. With restricted waveforms, the properties of the source can only be ext...

I overview the current understanding of the evolution of massive black hole (MBH) binaries in the center of the host stellar system. One of the main questions is whether the stellar dynamical effect can make the MBH binary hard enough that they can merge through gravitational wave radiation. So far, theories and numerical simulations suggested otherwize, since the hardening timescale becomes ve...
