Partitioning of benthic biodiversity in boreal streams: Contributions of spatial, inter‐annual, and seasonal variability

چکیده

Studies on biodiversity patterns should optimally relate different scales of temporal community variability to spatial variability. Although is often negligible compared variation, it may still constitute a substantial source overall in stream ecosystems. Boreal streams exhibit seasonally recurring environmental periodicity, which can be expected induce synchronous dynamics abiotic variables among sites, and consequently, produce synchrony deterministically controlled biological communities with higher intra- than inter-annual We sampled benthic macroinvertebrates 10 near-pristine boreal three seasons (spring, summer, autumn) across 4 consecutive years northern Finland. aimed identify the relative contributions spatial, inter-annual, seasonal biodiversity; variation invertebrate key factors, particularly in-stream habitat diversity. Among-site was clearly most important for both species richness dissimilarity. Of two scales, contributed more taxonomic slightly composition. Only differed systematically from random expectation, indicating strong stability (low variability) macroinvertebrate years, less at sites substrate heterogeneity. Considering distinct seasonality environment, accounted an unexpectedly low amount total differences between were small, autumnal sampling likely least susceptible climatic vagaries, thus providing consistent predictable conditions streams, bioassessment purposes. Exceptional are becoming frequent Europe, probably causing largely unpredictable changes As result, importance (relative spatial) increase.

Interannual and Seasonal Variability of Macroinvertebrates in Monsoonal Climate Streams

The aim of this study was to assess the interannual and seasonal changes in the community composition, abundance and presence-absence of macroinvertebrates in the streams of the northwestern of Argentina. The importance of environmental variability in determining these changes was also analyzed. Macroinvertebrates were collected in eleven streams during high (March) and low (September) water pe...

The Seasonal and Interannual Variability

The Labrador Sea, as one of a few places of deep water formation, plays an important role in the Meridional Overturning Circulation. While the interior of the Labrador Sea, where the deepest convection takes place, is known to experience variability on time scales ranging from days to decades, little is known about the variability of the other components of the Labrador Sea circulation the boun...

Benthic diatom communities in boreal streams: community structure in relation to environmental and spatial gradients

An important goal for community ecology is the characterization and prediction of changes in community patterns along environmental gradients. We aimed to identify the major environmental correlates of diatom distribution patterns in boreal running waters. We classified 197 stream sites based on their diatom flora. Direct ordination methods were then used to identify the key environmental deter...

Benthic Diatom Community Structure in Boreal Streams Distribution Patterns along Environmental and Spatial Gradients

The past decade has seen growing appreciation of the role of regional influences in determining the structure of local communities. An emerging view among ecologists is that local community composition is controlled by acting of nested filters which select species with suitable traits for prevailing conditions, thus leading communities regulated by local environmental factors and regional, main...

Spatial, seasonal and interannual variability of supraglacial ponds in the Langtang Valley of Nepal, 1999–2013

Supraglacial ponds play a key role in absorbing atmospheric energy and directing it to the ice of debris-covered glaciers, but the spatial and temporal distribution of these features is not well documented. We analyse 172 Landsat TM/ETM+ scenes for the period 1999–2013 to identify thawed supraglacial ponds for the debris-covered tongues of five glaciers in the Langtang Valley of Nepal. We apply...
