Patella resurfacing during total knee arthroplasty is cost-effective and has lower re-operation rates compared to non-resurfacing

چکیده
Abstract Background The decision to resurface the patella as part of total knee arthroplasty may be influenced by surgeon’s preference, education, training, tradition and geographic location. Advocates for non-resurfacing or selectively resurfacing claim no difference in patient reported outcomes, that is associated with increased risks such extensor mechanism injury malalignment, problems design component technical issues intraoperatively. Aims To critically examine factors should considered addition outcomes process arthroplasty. Method A comprehensive literature search was conducted identify influence making specific outcome measures surgical risks, quality life, procedure cost, re-operation rate, implant design, surgeons learning curve fate remaining cartilage native patellae. Results Patient-reported are equivocal non-resurfacing. Critical analysis available suggests complications historic, which now lower improved technique. Routine cost-effective long term (potential saving £104 per case) has rates revision (absolute risk reduction 4%). Finally, judgment selective prone errors. Conclusion Patella had similar patient-reported outcomes. However, a rate compared

Failure of total knee arthroplasty with or without patella resurfacing
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Patella resurfacing during primary total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is disputed and new prosthesis designs have been introduced without documentation of their survival. We assessed the impact on prosthesis survival of patella resurfacing and of prosthesis brand, based on data from the Norwegian Arthroplasty Register. PATIENTS AND METHODS 5 prosthesis brands in common use w...
متن کاملSecondary resurfacing of the patella in total knee arthroplasty.
Anterior knee pain following primary total knee arthroplasty is common and can be difficult to treat satisfactorily. We reviewed 28 consecutive patients (29 knees) who underwent secondary resurfacing of the patella for persistent anterior knee pain and report on the results. Mean follow-up was 28 months (range 12-61) with no cases lost to follow-up. Oxford knee scores, range of motion, the pati...
متن کاملEarly outcomes of patella resurfacing in total knee arthroplasty
BACKGROUND Patella resurfacing in total knee arthroplasty is a contentious issue. The literature suggests that resurfacing of the patella is based on surgeon preference, and little is known about the role and timing of resurfacing and how this affects outcomes. METHODS We analyzed 134,799 total knee arthroplasties using data from the Australian Orthopaedic Association National Joint Replaceme...
متن کاملComparison of Clinical Results between Patellar Resurfacing and Non-resurfacing in Total Knee Arthroplasty: A Short Term Evaluation
Background: There is no difference in the functional outcomes 6 months after total knee arthroplasty (TKA) for kneeosteoarthritis between patellar resurfacing and non-resurfacing. Thus, we have performed this study to compare theshort-term clinical outcomes of TKA performed with and without the patella resurfacing. Methods: A total of 50 patients with osteoarthritis of the knee (OAK) were random...
متن کاملPatella Resurfacing during Total Knee Arthroplasty: Have We Got the Issue Covered?
BACKGROUND Management of the patella during total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is controversial. Multiple studies have examined mechanical and clinical results of TKA with native and resurfaced patellae with no clear consensus. METHODS We surveyed a large cohort of consultant surgeons in a questionnaire based study in order to assess the indications for patella resurfacing and to correlate practic...
