Pattern of Steroid Use in a Tertiary Care Hospital

Introduction: Steroid is commonly prescribed anti-inflammatory drug used in some acute conditions as well for prolong period different indications. This life saving has significant side effects. Patients with steroid hazards are frequently encountered our clinical practice which should be minimized. Methodology: It was an Observational, Descriptive, Cross-sectional study. Study October 2013 to March 2014 the department of Medicine & Endocrinology, Sir Salimullah Medical College Mitford Hospital. Total 100 patients were taken who had history intake more than 7.5 mg/day equivalent prednisolone 3 months by purposive sampling technique. Results: The age range from 13 82 years. mean ±SD 45.2±9.75 Among them 57% female 43% male. 67% illiterate 82% low socioeconomic condition. Out 80% taking oral duration 8 ±4 and dose 10±2 mg/day. Frequency indications 29% Rheumatological, 20% respiratory disease, 12% Dermatological, Nephrological, Hematological, 5% Neurological, 4% mechanical pain, 3% gastrointestinal self-intake gaining weight. 52% receiving according qualified physician's advice, 41 % overuse beyond prescription rest without indication (abuse). most observed effects Cushingoid appearance (100%), skin changes (94%), weight gain (67%), Diabetes Mellitus (DM) - 64%, increased incidence infection (56% cases) disseminated tuberculosis 10%, Hypertension (HTN) 39%, osteoporotic collapse 11%, myopathy iatrogenic adrenal insufficiency psychosis 2% patients. Conclusion: Due lack awareness among health care provider, number people sometimes abuse country. Therefore, about judicious use country needed.
