Patterns of martian glacial deformation: Implications for glacio-geology, internal structure, and regional climate

چکیده

Viscous Flow Features (VFF) are widespread in the martian mid-latitudes and indicative of near-surface ice deposits. Their distribution morphology hint at regional history deposition ablation, as well changes surface temperature. Here we interrogate deformation a type VFF, Lobate Debris Apron (LDA), located eastern Hellas region, from its morphology, discussing implications it poses for internal structure climate variability. Our observations integrate data Colour Stereo Surface Imaging System (CaSSIS), SHAllow RADar (SHARAD), Context Camera (CTX), High Resolution Science Experiment (HiRISE), Mars Orbiter Laser Altimeter (MOLA). Morphological observations, spectral analysis characteristic wavelengths, stability place constraints on dynamics deposit. We discuss contrasting hypotheses origin different structures, including possibility gelifluction addition to glacial creep. results provide guide interpret patterns VFFs light structure, history, underlying topography.

Martian Layered Fluvial Deposits: Implications for Noachian Climate Scenarios

[1] Fluvial deposits in a basin north of Holden crater exhibiting a sinuous, anabranching pattern are of deltaic or fan origin. Channel width and meander wavelength indicate persistent flow magnitudes of about 700 m/s. If these flows were produced by quasi-periodic climate episodes involving typical terrestrial-style precipitation, the deposit required thousands to millions of years to accumula...

Glacial Geology of the Northern Uinta Mountains

Glacial deposits on the north slope of the Uinta Mountains were investigated through map and air photo interpretation combined with fi eld mapping. Deposits representing the Smiths Fork (local Pinedale equivalent), Blacks Fork (Bull Lake equivalent) and pre-Blacks Fork Glaciations are present in the form of terminal and lateral moraines, ground moraine, and outwash valley trains. Nineteen separ...

An Investigation into Fluorine within Gale Crater and its Implications for Martian Geology

Since the Mars Science Laboratory’s (MSL), Curiosity Rover began its exploration of Yellowknife Bay in Gale Crater, it has discovered an array of basaltic and secondary mineral assemblages representative of deposition in environments ranging from aeolian sand dunes to habitable lacustrine settings. Recently, the molecular analysis of ChemCam data has shown that fluorine has been detected in mul...

Glacial Geology of the Southern Uinta Mountains

It has been known for over a century that the Uinta Mountains contained numerous alpine glaciers during parts of the Quaternary Period, yet until recently, the glacial record on the south side of the range had received little scientifi c attention. Results of recent 1:24,000-scale fi eld mapping of surfi cial deposits in the southern Uinta Mountains indicate that glaciers in the southwestern an...

Martian Glacial Melt and Atmospheric Methane

Despite conditions on Mars favoring cold-based glaciers, there is also evidence of wetbased glaciers. We compare potential sources of basal water, and conclude that several melt mechanisms are possible. Gas hydrate clathrates within glacial ice can cause melting point depression, and are an intriguing possibility because the dissociation of clathrates releases a large quantity of energy in addi...
