Perception of visual-tactile asynchrony, bodily perceptual aberrations, and bodily illusions in schizophrenia

چکیده
Body perception can be altered in individuals with schizophrenia resulting experiences of undefined boundaries, loss ownership, and size changes. These may also more susceptible to the rubber hand illusion (RHI: an body that induced neurotypical populations), but findings are mixed. Furthermore, multisensory timing, which is thought fundamental for perception, schizophrenia. We tested whether temporal relationship between visual tactile signals predicts self-reported perceptual aberrations RHI susceptibility. found sensitivity detect asynchronies reduced this a significant predictor bodily symptoms. In contrast, we no evidence direct asynchrony detection Instead, our suggest experiencing symptoms increases likelihood endorsing unusual experiences, higher self-ratings not proprioceptive drift scores. Our provide new insight into factors underlie report perceptions

Bodily Illusions Modulate Tactile Perception
Touch differs from other exteroceptive senses in that the body itself forms part of the tactile percept. Interactions between proprioception and touch provide a powerful way to investigate the implicit body representation underlying touch. Here, we demonstrate that an intrinsic primary quality of a tactile object, for example its size, is directly affected by the perceived size of the body part...
متن کاملBodily illusions disrupt tactile sensations.
To accurately interpret tactile information, the brain needs to have an accurate representation of the body to which to refer the sensations. Despite this, body representation has only recently been incorporated into the study of tactile perception. Here, we investigate whether distortions of body representation affect tactile sensations. We perceptually altered the length of the arm and the wi...
متن کاملTactile perception, cortical representation and the bodily self
The sensory information we receive from our own bodies is unique, both from epistemological and neurological points of view. Philosophers have noted the immediate, private quality of bodily sensation. I can understand your visual percepts by looking in the same direction as you, but understanding your tactile sensation would require being in your skin! Descartes took an additional step, arguing...
متن کاملVisual perception of bodily interactions in the primary somatosensory cortex.
Brain imaging studies in humans have revealed the existence of a visuo-tactile system, which matches observed touch with felt touch. In this system, the primary somatosensory cortex (SI) appears to play a causal role in the visual processing of tactile events. Whether this visuo-tactile mechanism for touch in SI applies to the sight of 'any' touch, or whether it is restricted to the domain of b...
متن کاملBodily action penetrates affective perception.
Fantoni & Gerbino (2014) showed that subtle postural shifts associated with reaching can have a strong hedonic impact and affect how actors experience facial expressions of emotion. Using a novel Motor Action Mood Induction Procedure (MAMIP), they found consistent congruency effects in participants who performed a facial emotion identification task after a sequence of visually-guided reaches: a...
