Performance Limit of Fiber-Longitudinal Power Profile Estimation Methods

This paper presents analytical results on longitudinal power profile estimation (PPE) methods, which visualize signal evolution in optical fibers at a coherent receiver. The PPE can be formulated as an inverse problem of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation, where coefficient (and thus power) is reconstructed from boundary conditions, i.e., transmitted and received signals. Two types methods are reviewed analyzed, including correlation-based (CMs) minimum-mean-square-error-based (MMSEs). expressions for their output profiles spatial resolution provided, theoretical performance limits two differences clarified. derived equations indicate that estimated CMs understood convolution true smoothing function. Consequently, measurement accuracy limited, even under noiseless distortionless conditions. Closed-form formulas shown to inversely proportional product chromatic dispersion square bandwidth. With MMSEs, such effect canceled out approach fine step size.
