Adult renal myoepithelial hamartoma.

A renal myoepithelial hamartoma presented as a lucent filling defect with gross hematuria in an adult female. Preoperative studies caused conflicting impressions. The predominance of smooth muscle and incorporated tubuloepithelial elements characterize the tumor as a hamartoma of myoepithelial type. Pertinent review of the literature confirms the rarity of this lesion in adults.

Familial adult renal neoplasia.

Our understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying the tumorigenesis of renal cell carcinoma (RCC) has partially come from studies of RCC related familial cancer syndromes such as von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) disease and hereditary papillary RCC (HPRC). These studies have led to the identification of RCC related genes, which, besides allowing accurate diagnosis of these diseases, have been fou...

Perinatal ANG II programs adult blood pressure, glomerular number, and renal function in rats.

ANG II is known to be important in normal renal development, but the long-term consequences of a suppressed renin-angiotensin system (RAS) during the developmental period are not completely understood. This study tested the hypothesis that the RAS in the developing animal is important in long-term regulation of renal function and arterial pressure. Newborn Sprague-Dawley rat pups were given the...

Perinatal development and adult blood pressure.

A growing body of evidence supports the concept of fetal programming in cardiovascular disease in man, which asserts that an insult experienced in utero exerts a long-term influence on cardiovascular function, leading to disease in adulthood. However, this hypothesis is not universally accepted, hence animal models may be of value in determining potential physiological mechanisms which could ex...

NEUROTROPHINS: Roles in Neuronal Development and Function1

■ Abstract Neurotrophins regulate development, maintenance, and function of vertebrate nervous systems. Neurotrophins activate two different classes of receptors, the Trk family of receptor tyrosine kinases and p75NTR, a member of the TNF receptor superfamily. Through these, neurotrophins activate many signaling pathways, including those mediated by ras and members of the cdc-42/ras/rho G prote...
