Periodic patterns displace active phase separation

چکیده

Abstract In this work we identify and investigate a novel bifurcation in conserved systems. This secondary stops active phase separation its nonlinear regime. It is then either replaced by an extended, system-filling, spatially periodic pattern or, complementary parameter region, hybrid state with alternating homogeneous states. The transition from to extended patterns hysteretic. We show that the resulting are multistable, as they stability beyond for different wavenumbers belonging wavenumber band. states continuous. Both scenarios systems-spanning phenomena particle conserving They predicted generic dissipative model introduced work. Candidates specific systems, which these transitions likely occur, are, example, generalized models motility-induced Brownian particles, cell division or chemotactic systems dynamics.

Traveling spatially periodic forcing of phase separation

Abstract. We present a theoretical analysis of phase separation in the presence of a spatially periodic forcing of wavenumber q traveling with a velocity v. By an analytical and numerical study of a suitably generalized 2d-Cahn-Hilliard model we find as a function of the forcing amplitude and the velocity three different regimes of phase separation. For a sufficiently large forcing amplitude a ...

Spatial periodic forcing can displace patterns it is intended to control.

Spatial periodic forcing of pattern-forming systems is an important, but lightly studied, method of controlling patterns. It can be used to control the amplitude and wave number of one-dimensional periodic patterns, to stabilize unstable patterns, and to induce them below instability onset. We show that, although in one spatial dimension the forcing acts to reinforce the patterns, in two dimens...

Phase Separation Patterns from Directional Quenching

We study the effect of directional quenching on patterns formed in simple bistable systems such as the Allen-Cahn and the Cahn-Hilliard equation on the plane. We model directional quenching as an externally triggered change in system parameters, changing the system from monostable to bistable across an interface. We are then interested in patterns forming in the bistable region, in particular a...

Periodic modulation of tubular vesicles induced by phase separation.

We investigated changes in the shape of tubular ternary vesicles induced by phase separation into liquid-ordered and liquid-disordered phases. Tubular vesicles transform into two types of periodically modulated vesicles depending on the area fraction of the liquid-ordered phase. One type is a necklace of oblate subunits with two circular domains of the liquid-order phase, and the other is a per...

Stable periodic constant mean curvature surfaces and mesoscopic phase separation

We give a first comprehensive description of the stable solutions of the periodic isoperimetric problem in the case of lattice symmetry. This result is intended to elucidate the geometry of certain sophisticated interfaces appearing in mesoscale phase separation phenomena. We prove that closed, stable, constant mean curvature surfaces in R3/Γ , Γ ⊂ R3 being a discrete subgroup of translations w...
