Persistence of tropical herbivores in temperate reefs constrains kelp resilience to cryptic habitats

چکیده
Global warming is facilitating the range expansion of tropical herbivores, causing a tropicalization temperate marine ecosystems, where herbivores can suppress habitat-forming macrophytes, supporting resilience canopy-free ecosystem states. However, currently we lack thorough understanding mechanisms that, on one hand, support persistence and other recovery foundation species in tropicalized required knowledge to predict potential regime shifts reversals baseline state ecosystem. This study tested processes behind reefs which experienced complete loss their kelp forests an influx following heatwave 2011. For this, assessed feedback that maintain turf-dominated states (recruitment browsing grazing rates turf cover) those resist it (kelp recruitment, survival reproductiveness). We found remained with high abundances after 9 years from shift. The rabbitfish Siganus fuscescens chub Kyphosus bigibbus were most important whose was supported by adjacent reef lagoon, seagrass meadows backreef habitats hosted juveniles both species, particularly rabbitfish. Tropical exerted strong top–down control seaweed during herbivory assays, rapidly consuming individuals open areas. topographical refuges reefs, low survived, some having reproductive tissue. Synthesis. Our findings incorporate importance nursery grounds for refugia into model, former increases latter might facilitate recovering populations. restoration abundant warm-resistant populations shelters could provide local sources propagules recolonize spaces; however, our results suggest reduction provision turf-free substratum would be necessary boost forests.

Deep-water kelp refugia as potential hotspots of tropical marine diversity and productivity.
Classic marine ecological paradigms view kelp forests as inherently temperate-boreal phenomena replaced by coral reefs in tropical waters. These paradigms hinge on the notion that tropical surface waters are too warm and nutrient-depleted to support kelp productivity and survival. We present a synthetic oceanographic and ecophysiological model that accurately identifies all known kelp populatio...
متن کاملAre tropical herbivores more tolerant of chemically rich seaweeds than are temperate herbivores? A test of seaweed- herbivore coevolution
There is a greater quantity and diversity of lipophilic secondary metabolites produced by seaweeds within tropical relative to temperate regions. Coevolutionary arms-race theory predicts that tropical herbivores should more readily tolerate consuming chemically-rich seaweeds than do temperate herbivores, however, tests of this prediction are rare. We assessed the willingness to consume freeze-d...
متن کاملComparative Studies of the Thyroid Function in Teleosts of Tropical and Temperate Habitats
The presence of thyroid gland tissue in teleosts was first reported by Simon (1844), and later its structure was shown to consist of follicular units similar to those in the thyroid gland of higher vertebrates. The teleostean gland is not discrete but consists of numerous scattered follicles. Marine & Lenhart (1910) observed a hyperplastic condition of the thyroid tissue in some trout in hatche...
متن کاملOptimization of cryptic coloration in heterogeneous habitats
We present a theoretical approach to the optimization of crypsis in heterogeneous habitats. Our model habitat consists of two different microhabitats, and the optimal combination of crypsis in the microhabitats is supposed to maximize the probability of escaping detection by a predator. The probability of escaping detection for a prey is a function of: (i) degree of crypsis, (ii) probability of...
متن کاملLong-term empirical evidence of ocean warming leading to tropicalization of fish communities, increased herbivory, and loss of kelp.
Some of the most profound effects of climate change on ecological communities are due to alterations in species interactions rather than direct physiological effects of changing environmental conditions. Empirical evidence of historical changes in species interactions within climate-impacted communities is, however, rare and difficult to obtain. Here, we demonstrate the recent disappearance of ...
