Phase-field modeling of brittle fracture in heterogeneous bars

چکیده

We investigate phase-field modeling of brittle fracture in a one-dimensional bar featuring continuous variation elastic and/or properties along its axis. Our main goal is to quantitatively assess how the heterogeneity and material influences observed behavior bar, as obtained from approach. The results clarify limit stress, peak stress toughness heterogeneous relate those reference homogeneous what are parameters affecting these relationships. Overall, effect shown be strictly tied non-local nature regularization. Finally, we show that this non-locality may amend ill-posedness sharp-crack problem bars where multiple points compete locations.

A phase-field description of dynamic brittle fracture

In contrast to discrete descriptions of fracture, phase-field descriptions do not require numerical tracking of discontinuities in the displacement field. This greatly reduces implementation complexity. In this work, we extend a phase-field model for quasi-static brittle fracture to the dynamic case. We introduce a phasefield approximation to the Lagrangian for discrete fracture problems and de...

Phase-field modeling and simulation of fracture in brittle materials with strongly anisotropic surface energy

Crack propagation in brittle materials with anisotropic surface energy is important in applications involving single crystals, extruded polymers, or geological and organic materials. Furthermore, when this anisotropy is strong, the phenomenology of crack propagation becomes very rich, with forbidden crack propagation directions or complex sawtooth crack patterns. This problem interrogates funda...

A Geometrically Nonlinear Phase Field Theory of Brittle Fracture

Phase field theory is developed for solids undergoing potentially large deformation and fracture. The elastic potential depends on a finite measure of elastic strain. Surface energy associated with fracture can be anisotropic, enabling description of preferred cleavage planes in single crystals, or isotropic, applicable to amorphous solids such as glass. Incremental solution of the Euler–Lagran...

IS - Phase Field Modeling of Coupled Problems 3D phase-field for pressurized fracture propagation in heterogeneous media

This work presents recent progress in phase-field-based fracture modeling in heterogeneous porous media. Existing algorithms that have been developed in the last years are extended to tackle three-dimensional configurations. Our solution technique is formulated in terms of a nested Newton loop that combines a primal-dual active set method (required for treating the crack irreversibility) and a ...

Phase Field Modeling of Fracture and Composite Materials

The phase field method is a very powerful numerical method to solve moving boundary problems. Here we demonstrate how it can be applied to various processes involving sound propagation and fracture. This approach is related to a new theory of fracture which describes in particular the fast growth of cracks. We study the propagation of elastic waves, the determination of stress intensity factors...
