Piezo Capsule: Ultrasonic Way of Wireless Pressure Measurement

Heart failure (HF) rates elevate worldwide with the aging population. Miniaturized and wireless implants real-time data transfer capability can alleviate surgical complexities of cardiac pressure monitoring. Despite recent developments mm-size complex circuitries self-powering units, a simple, passive, effective implant design for reading is missing. Here, piezo capsule, cost-effective, miniaturized passive ultrasound sensing system, introduced. The capsule consists 1 mm-cube-sized lead zirconate titanate (PZT) transducer T-shaped mechanical pin. impedance changes an interrogating probe, which ultrasonically coupled to receiver implant, correlate electrical/mechanical loading capsule. ultrasonic properties proposed device are characterized across hard-solid medium (e.g., plexiglass) soft tissue-like media polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) chicken breast tissue) verified using finite element simulations. Last, dynamic readings artificial vessel varying fluid flow pulse-frequency volumetric rate demonstrated. sensitivity 0.375 Ω kPa−1 achieved as changed from 14 86 kPa pulse frequency 0 100 bpm fixed 8 mL min−1.
