Post-earthquake short-run labor income shifts. What happens with the distribution of wages after an earthquake?

نویسندگان

چکیده

In this article we explore whether a strong earthquake (Manabí and Esmeraldas provinces, Ecuador, April 16th, 2016) had distributional effect in labor income. We use survey micro-data exploit the exogenous nature of shock with an empirical strategy based on combination matching, difference (DID) quantile regression (QR) methods using three intensity measures to define our treatment group (Peak Ground Acceleration, PGA; Modified Mercalli Intensity, MMI; Peak Velocity, PGV). find short-run favorable poorest workers most seismic areas, higher growth rates for female first deciles. Quantile differences (QDID) estimates matched individuals show increases approximately 12% decile income 9.5% second one. Our results suggest that some opportunities might arise lower-paid if economic incentives are directed towards affected areas.

What Is the Chance of an Earthquake?

What is the chance that an earthquake of magnitude 6.7 or greater will occur before the year 2030 in the San Francisco Bay Area? The U.S. Geological Survey estimated the chance to be 0.7 ± 0.1 (USGS, 1999). In this paper, we try to interpret such probabilities. Making sense of earthquake forecasts is surprisingly difficult. In part, this is because the forecasts are based on a complicated mixtu...

Statistical short-term earthquake prediction.

A statistical procedure, derived from a theoretical model of fracture growth, is used to identify a foreshock sequence while it is in progress. As a predictor, the procedure reduces the average uncertainty in the rate of occurrence for a future strong earthquake by a factor of more than 1000 when compared with the Poisson rate of occurrence. About one-third of all main shocks with local magnitu...
