Potential of medium chain fatty acids production from municipal solid waste leachate: Effect of age and external electron donors

A large quantity of leachate is generated during municipal solid waste collection operation and in landfills due to the amount organic high humidity. The content medium chain fatty acids (MCFAs) a low cost feedstock for bio-based chemical fuel production processes. aim this study investigate MCFA potential three ages through elongation process under uncontrolled pH batch test. Moreover, effect using different external electron donors (ethanol, methanol mixture both) studied. experiment consists characterizing samples then adding with specific ratio mesophilic temperature. For investigation, also statistical analysis done, which shows MCFAs highly influenced by age. results indicate that even-numbered increase from 600 1,000 mg/L end ethanol young leachate. However, higher more than achieved as donor. Furthermore, all experiments lead an odd-numbered MCFAs, such pentanoic heptanoic acids. These confirm improvement choosing optimal age Overall, producing good example circular bio-economy because used produce biochemicals, closes material cycle.
