چکیده
We describe a new method suitable for the precise and accurate determination of 226Ra in porewater sediment samples using single-collector sector field ICP-MS (ThermoFisher Element XR) equipped with an Apex-Q desolvation device high-sensitivity Jet-X interface. In combination 230Th measurements parallel samples, this allows quantification 226Ra/230Th disequilibria surface cores, thereby enabling use isotope pair as tracer solute transfer across sediment-water interface deep ocean. The integrates step dilution 228Ra internal spike, pre-concentration Ra Ba by MnO2 precipitation, efficient separation from other undesirable elements cation exchange resin Triskem Sr-spec resin. With inclusion one or two additional columns up to 16 bed-volumes lower molarity (1.7 M) HCl eluent, our procedure eliminates complicated matrix effects persistently encountered previous studies, provides highly purified solution measurement XR apparatus. Consequently, we are able determine activity ∼20–50 ml 100 mg precision ∼1.0% accuracy ∼99.2%. solid phase core North Pacific Ocean allowed distribution coefficient (Kd) be constrained tightly within range 4700–11,600 g−1. Moreover, aid one-dimensional model, us estimate flux 1140 ± 20 dpm m−2 y−1 core.

Microplastic pollution in deep-sea sediments.
Microplastics are small plastic particles (<1 mm) originating from the degradation of larger plastic debris. These microplastics have been accumulating in the marine environment for decades and have been detected throughout the water column and in sublittoral and beach sediments worldwide. However, up to now, it has never been established whether microplastic presence in sediments is limited to...
متن کاملPrecise multielemental ratios in small foraminiferal samples determined by sector field ICP-MS
[1] Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) holds two main advantages over other techniques for the measurement of foraminiferal elemental ratios: (1) numerous trace metals may be precisely and simultaneously measured, and (2) smaller samples may theoretically be used. Methods are presented for the precise determination of Mg/Ca, Sr/Ca, Cd/Ca, Zn/Ca, Li/Ca, U/Ca, Mn/Ca, and Fe/Ca ...
متن کاملMesoscale eddies transport deep-sea sediments
Mesoscale eddies, which contribute to long-distance water mass transport and biogeochemical budget in the upper ocean, have recently been taken into assessment of the deep-sea hydrodynamic variability. However, how such eddies influence sediment movement in the deepwater environment has not been explored. Here for the first time we observed deep-sea sediment transport processes driven by mesosc...

متن کاملBiogeochemical Cycle of Methanol in Anoxic Deep-Sea Sediments
The biological flux and lifetime of methanol in anoxic marine sediments are largely unknown. We herein reported, for the first time, quantitative methanol removal rates in subsurface sediments. Anaerobic incubation experiments with radiotracers showed high rates of microbial methanol consumption. Notably, methanol oxidation to CO2 surpassed methanol assimilation and methanogenesis from CO2/H2 a...
